Dreams & The Pleated Chiffon Skirt

I have big dreams and little dreams that set the tone for my daily life. Sometimes we feel the need to dream.  We dream about life, who we are and who we want to be. After we have dreamt we take action, we work and try to live and work for our dreams in every single thing we do.

Personally, I see dreaming as a motivation and as the reason for me to wake up every morning, to learn and do something new that will help me be the person I want to be. I like to get ready everyday to live my dreams, I like to dress without regrets and always thinking that whatever I do today is just another step towards tomorrow. I have big dreams and little dreams that are a part of me and that like a pleated chiffon skirt fold and unfold revealing something new as I walk through life.

Camouflage: Only As A Print, Never As A Lifestyle

Do we ever just blend in or do we just find different ways to express ourselves to fit the norm? I often ask myself that, specially when it comes to style, do we all just end up wearing things that end up becoming uniforms that make us blend in and get lost in the surroundings?
To be honest, I believe it really isn't about what we wear per se, it is more about how we wear it. Let's face it, style is about bringing our inner self into the mix and let it improve the outer self, just like that, there will always be something about us coming through in the middle of all the fabric, the colours and the textures. Some may wear things that are on the daring side, others may wear things on the more discrete side and neither one means they'll fade into the background; on the contrary, they could both in different ways make you stand out when you choose to own every look, when you choose to let your actions, your ideas and ideals be what drive your style instead of opting to look like everyone else. So let the only type of camouflaging you do in your life be a print and nothing else!

Beauty in Fear: A Message to You, Me, Us

I think people are afraid of sharing their fears, I think people are afraid of hearing others share their fears. What would happen if we dared share what's deep inside us? Would people panic or would they stop and listen?
What would happen if I told you you are not the only one with those fears?

Allow me to have an honest moment with you, my dear readers:

I have a fear of not being able to keep track of what I believe in, my fear is to be too sensitive to people scrutinizing me, of letting someone else's opinions bring me to question my life choices, that is my fear.
Modesty, out of all things, is something that those who are brave embrace, something that is difficult to find in a chaotic world that demands us to keep very little to ourselves, something that we need to fight for to be able to hold on to. It ain't easy living a modest lifestyle.

I feel as if people ignore the big elephant in the room and rather deal with their feelings on their own and end up feeling left out and out of place. I'm  not saying it happens to everyone, but in my personal experience I've felt and I've seen other women who choose modesty feel left out from everything from time-to-time. From not finding what to wear, to other more deep rooted situations like not being able to feel comfortable while going out because everyone stares, or not being able to love yourself for who you are. What ever the deal is, us women who adopt modesty as a lifestyle may feel the need to step away from it just so we can 'fit in'; however, always remember that you are not alone, there are millions of women around the world that like you,me, us chose to be different.

Remember you have fashion and style to make it all seem a lot more fun and dare I say, beautiful. It really isn't about  "Oh look what I am wearing and look how many things I've got" it really is about "I can make myself feel pretty with what I like and what I believe in", modesty and fashion go hand in hand to make you, me, us feel gorgeous and powerful. Whenever you feel like you can't walk with your head held high and feel like you will never 'fit in', remember that princesses were never meant 'fit in', they stand out. So stand out in style and like a true princess, wear a head piece!

A Little Poetry

There is a little poetry in everything we do. From the early morning when we wake up to every smile we give out to people and every little bit of inspiration we draw from those around us, that is poetic, life is poetic.
And if it's poetry we talk about, let me tell you, there is nothing more poetic than stepping out of our comfort zone into the wild, the wild being a different aesthetic, a different look or simple a different pair of pants. Change, unlike everything else in the world, is the one constant poetic happening that makes us happy every day, that keep us going and that gives us hope on what's to come, change is poetic , risk taking is poetic and me wearing pastels today, was a little bit poetic.

To some, pastels are for spring/summer, but who's to say that pastels are not to be worn in the winte? No one, that's one of the poetic beauties of life: Nothing is completely certain, nothing has to stay the same way. Explore and try to find within how beautiful it is to change a little bit on the little things and our life should start feeling like a poem, a poem written by you.

Poetry is in the details

Growing Up In Style

Have you ever wondered: What happens when we grow up? Do we lose all sense of fun, do we become too serious to have fun? Is growing up one of those things that just tells us to leave behind the little things we enjoy and put on a poker face, or better yet, a poker outfit? I really do not think so.

Growing up is something that inevitably will show growth in who we are and, believe it or not, on how we dress. It is all about finding our way and our identity through clothes. The older we get the more able we are to find our identity in both style and clothing (which are two different things).

My 21st birthday came and went during this week. To many turning 21 is a huge milestone, while to me it became a day where I realized I had made better sense of how I should dress and that my sense of style had really come an extremely long way. Why? Because I edit more! Yes, I finally found it in myself to edit! Don't get me wrong, a little bit too much is always more fun for me, but on January 17th, simple black was just all I needed. Forget the over-accessorizing and bright colours, I went for the chic-est colour there is: Black and just three very simple jewellery pieces; so simple than in pictures you only see one of them: The golden necklace.

Growing up, style wise, is not about becoming boring, it is about becoming the kind of person that as Coco Chanel did: Always takes something like a piece of jewellery off before leaving the house. Growing up in style, like in life, is all about making smart choices and finding the least complicated options.

Don't lose the fun-factor in your life, find the fun in hints of colours,
different shapes and in textures!

Dancing Queen

"You can dance, you can jive, having the time of your life "
Hello Loves!!! I realize outfit posts are your cup of tea and to be honest, so are mine. It is fun to strike a pose and play around with what you wear, isn't it? I guess us girls never really got over the dressing up and playing time. This post is slightly celebratory, my birthday is this Thursday and I ain't sure I'll get the chance to snap a picture in the mist of all the cake eating and opening of gifts (I hope there is a lot of both) so here you go!

I was wearing an incredibly beautiful maxi skirt I am absolutely in love with. The way it moves and flows, it is a whole-lot of chiffon that would make anyone want to dance, specially when the wind is blowing. The t-shirt was a nice contrast, very casual and less formal, the perfect way to neutralize the ball-like tone of the maxi. Brown hand bag and animal print scarf to add a pop to an other-wise fairly simple outfit.

"See that girl, watch that scene, diggin' the dancing queen "

"You are the dancing queen, young and sweet, only seventeen twenty one"

Maxi skirt: Massimo Dutti
Top: Stradivarious

LOTD: New Year's in Full Colour & Shine

It's 2013 and what a better way to welcome it than with all the positive attitude and a wardrobe that will dictate what you want your year to be? For me it was a matter of me setting the tone for what my attitude is going to be like for the new year, I wanted colour and shine with a hint of mystery and that is what I got. The multi-coloured printed hijab made by me with the blue and black chiffon top and the ever so fabulous Mango glitter pants and forever21 burgundy clutch and shoes where the items of choice. Here is to a daring 2013!

LOTD: My Love For Quick Outfits!

Hello lovelies!!!! I know, I know, posting has been extremely slow, I have no excuse, but I love my readers for being interested enough to email me asking me to do some other posts! Here I am, with an outfit post! wohoo!
In the past week I've been taking time to catch up with friends I haven't seen in ages and just go out to grab a bite to eat (it seems like everything I do is eat). Therefore I can't be bothered with extra elaborated outfits, but instead just go for the simple outfits, where all I wear is a pair of pants a t-shirt and a jacket, and that's it. That is exactly what I am wearing on this outfit post, but in order to keep it from looking boring I made sure  wore pants with a (subtle) print on them and added collar tips to random parts of my jacket/blazer from H&M oh and the printed scarf as well!

OH and let me give you a quick update of what's coming up!

  1. College Fashionista: As you may or may not know, I write for CollegeFashionista.co.uk (the best online portal for everything college-related fashion) and I'm excited to let you know that I WILL be with the CF team for another season! so make sure you do check out the site and all.
  2. Keek: Yes! I joined the hype so you might as well just go follow me on there, to catch some random silly videos posted by me, the user name is KikiStyleMod
  3. Tumblr/instagram: I have been updating my Tumblr and my instagram almost daily, it's easier to post random pictures with what I wear, OOTD, what i am up to, etc. so go follow me and keep up!
That is all lovelies for today, and there will be more to come on here, so stay tune!

No Winter

No winter, no summer, probably some spring and a whole lot of fall. Yes that's right, You won't see me wearing a lot of coats or a lot of  flowery prints. Living in the so-called "tropical" Colombian land, is definitely the reason behind my sense of style (that is assuming I have one). I wear a lot of black, some leather and a bit of wool all year round, a certain pastel or neon may pop up in my wardrobe every now and then, and wearing trends is not on the daily menu.
Today's look is a black and gray outfit with dashes of prints, with a baroque print on the pants and zebra flats.
My accessories: a Bershka bag I've had for ages (that is actually a laptop case) sunglasses and a pseudo-shinny hombre-ish black and gray scarf.
Where did I buy everything? That's the thing, sometimes we keep clothes for longer than just one or two seasons, so I don't really keep track of where I buy things from; this things are from here and there, the only thing I recall is that the long chiffon vest is from forever 21, the rest, is probably from local shops or flea markets. That's how we do it in Colombia, we improvise, because there is no winter for us.

Strike a pose...An awkward pose, that is.

Kiss good bye!
And you? Do you improvise or try to adhere to trends? Let us know!

Confessions & The little Gold Jacket

Confession #1: After three years I still don't know how to tie/wrap my scarf. I still find a way to improvise in the morning, I never know how or what works for my face I just wrap it and hope for the best( i.e. hopefully it will stay in place all day).

Confession #2: I dress according to my mood...The better I feel the shinnier/brighter I dress, I rely on black and wear it a lot, simply because it means I am not as happy about life as I would be if I was wearing a different color like red or blue.

Confession #3: I dress to impress...yes, I said it! I see clothing as a personal statement and the best tool to make a first impression, on big occasions I expect to be dressed properly and cause an impact.

Confession #4: For me, more is always more. I don't care what the trend is or who is going to like it or not I tend to always choose to wear things that pop...even if it's in black, there still needs to be something that pops.

Confession #5: I feel like I've wasted an outfit if I like the way I look and do not take a full body picture, preferably with my SLR, on that day.

That is all lovelies...jacket, scarf, leggings and dress are from Forever21, in case you are wondering!

LOTD: Simplicity...

Simple in Black

There is a certain beauty in simplicity that can't be easily described. Is it the effortless feel of tranquility and soberness or is it it's practicality? Who knows! What we do know, is that simplicity always tends to work for everyone. I received some emails from you guys asking me to do an outfit post with pieces that women of all ages would be comfortable wearing on a daily basis, no prints, just something simple and pretty classic and well...here it is!

I believe it doesn't get any more simple and versatile, yet elegant, than a black turtle neck paired with a pleated skirt, a plain black chiffon scarf/hijab and a couple of red accessories, like a watch, a necklace and a belt. It is elegant and casual at the same time, and can easily be taken from day to night! So here is to simplicity and modest pieces and a versatile look, appropriate for everyone!

Pleated skirts are extremely lady like, this one was designed and sown by me.
Accessories close up and plum nails!

If you have any questions, suggestions or comments or would like me to do a post about something specific please send an email to info@stylemodesta.com, I'll make sure I'll get back to you asap.
